What is libel?

Publishing false information that exposes someone to public hostility, humiliation, dishonor, or ridicule, or that creates a negative view of them, is known as libel. This includes text, images, cartoons, and other media.

Associated Press Style and Libel Guide 251 states that news reports that accuse someone of a crime, fraud, dishonesty, immoral or dishonorable conduct, or that defame the subject professionally and cause financial loss to the subject or to a business are the primary cause of libel actions.
